The U.S. Geological Survey's monitoring service reported the magnitude at 6.9. Staff in Television New Zealand's newsroom ducked under desks as the building shook. Glass windows shattered in some buildings and littered the sidewalks. Civil Defence Spokesperson, Bruce Pepperell said there were no reports of any casualties so far. "So there are some reasonably significant damage that the team are on to at the moment. There are a lot of people trapped in lifts, obviously.
